Apply To Be An Animal Photojournalism Fellow
We are now accepting applications for the inaugural We Animals Media Animal Photojournalism Fellowship. The Fellowship will support one Fellow to work remotely with Founder and Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur and the We Animals Media team to cover a story about animals used for food, a subject significantly underreported in the media.
The program will support the Fellow in the following:
- Story development, execution, and shooting technique
- How to investigate animal industries
- Promotion of a completed project
- Networking, partnerships and community
The Fellow will work remotely with Jo-Anne McArthur over a series of meetings beginning in January 2022 for up to 10 months. The fellow will receive $6400CAD to cover project costs and as a stipend for the duration of the Fellowship.
The Fellowship is open to those with a track record of shooting high quality animal photojournalism stories who would benefit from professional guidance on their craft. Applicants must have a clear proposal that they would like to cover if selected that may not otherwise be completed without WAM’s support. The focus of the proposal must be on animals used for food. We are especially interested in proposals from those based in Asia or Latin America. Applicants must apply as individuals, and must have intermediate level English or above.
Applications for the 2022 Fellowship closed on November 14th, 2021. We will announce the Fellow in January 2022.
We Animals Media (WAM) brings visibility to the lives of hidden animals through compelling photography and film. As the world’s leading animal photojournalism agency, it is our mission to document the stories of animals in the human environment — those used for food, fashion, entertainment, and experimentation — and to connect those stories to the individuals and organizations who can amplify their reach.
Our growing network of award-winning photographers and videographers extends throughout the world, capturing images from a broad and diverse spectrum of animal industries. Together we have created the world’s leading library of animal images and video. This globally accessible resource is made available for free to anyone looking to inspire change, and is accessed daily by media, educators, policy-makers, and individuals.
WAM is a federally incorporated non-profit based in Toronto, Canada.
Check out the We Animals Media Masterclass series, an online and self-paced video series designed to teach the basic foundations of animal photojournalism by following WAM’s Founder and Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur as she covers the lessons she has learned from almost two decades in the field.
