The Animal Photojournalism Fellowship
Our Fellowship supports a Fellow to work remotely with Founder and Photographer Jo-Anne McArthur and the We Animals Media team to cover a story about animals used for food, a subject significantly underreported in the media.
Our inaugural 2022 Fellow is Seb Alex. Read about his work and proposal to document factory farming.
Applications for our second Fellowship will open in late 2022. Subscribe to our newsletter to keep updated.
The program supports the Fellow in the following:
- Story development, execution, and shooting technique
- How to investigate animal industries
- Promotion of a completed project
- Networking, partnerships and community
The Fellow works remotely with Jo-Anne McArthur over a series of meetings for up to 10 months. They receive funding in the form of a training stipend and project expense coverage for the duration of the Fellowship.
The Fellowship is open to those with a track record of shooting high quality animal photojournalism stories who would benefit from professional guidance on their craft. Applicants must have a clear proposal that they would like to cover if selected that may not otherwise be completed without WAM’s support. The focus of the proposal must be on animals used for food. We are especially interested in proposals from those based in Asia or Latin America. Applicants must apply as individuals, and must have intermediate level English or above.
We Animals Media (WAM) brings visibility to the lives of hidden animals through compelling photography and film. As the world’s leading animal photojournalism agency, it is our mission to document the stories of animals in the human environment — those used for food, fashion, entertainment, and experimentation — and to connect those stories to the individuals and organizations who can amplify their reach.
Our growing network of award-winning photographers and videographers extends throughout the world, capturing images from a broad and diverse spectrum of animal industries. Together we have created the world’s leading library of animal images and video. This globally accessible resource is made available for free to anyone looking to inspire change, and is accessed daily by media, educators, policy-makers, and individuals.
WAM is a federally incorporated non-profit based in Toronto, Canada.
