Pangolins are largely covered in scales made of keratin-the same material found in human fingernails. Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world, and you’ve probably never heard of them. They are trafficked by the thousands for their scales, which are boiled off their bodies for use in traditional medicine; for their meat, which is a high-end delicacy in Vietnam and in China; and for their blood, which is considered to be a healing tonic.
